Perfutil was engaged by PPXTEC to bridge the filesharing boundary between iOS and Android on an existing Bluetooth Medical File sharing mobile application. Their application allows the easy sharing of medical information and images (X-rays, MRIs etc.) with your doctor in moments. Their system already supported Android to Android, and iOS to iOS transfers. With our assistance, they can now support Android to iOS and iOS to Android transfers, without internet access, sharing the files directly device-to-device.
Apple devices only support Bluetooth connections with devices that have a specific hardware chip installed as part of the MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) program. As such it does not support Bluetooth connections with Android devices. However, this can be circumvented using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to allow any OS to connect to any other. BLE commands on iOS and on Android are mostly undocumented and only experience with using them can give full insight into their use.
Furthermore, even if basic connectivity can be achieved, there are a lot of hardware and theoretical limits that must be fully understood and managed in order to achieve the highest transfer rates.
Our in-depth experience of Bluetooth and BLE mean that we already know how to use all documented and undocumented features on both iOS and Android, across multiple OS versions, devices and Bluetooth versions. We know how to maximise packet rates and sizes across all these variations leading to low latency, high speed transfers, no matter what devices you need to support or what use case you need to support.
